DIRECTION

The Captain of the ship - the Director visualises the story and works to tell that particular story to the audience. The course covers all the major aspects of cinema that the Filmmaker needs to know to execute the project as per their vision. 

 

1.Introduction to technical aspects of film

 

2. Understanding Production: Various departments and their jobs including art, set, design, script breakdown, casting, storyboard, music, editing, camera dept, stunts, visual effects and other post work. From start to finish, what constitutes or makes a movie. 
Guest lectures from some of those departments to specifically talk about their job and how it affects the move in total. 

 

3. Fundaments of Cinematography 
Understanding basic lighting, frames, setup, working with a camera and telling your story through a visual narrative.

 

4. Developing a short film script, pre-production for a short film and finalising cast. 

 

5. Write treatment and analysis of a film.

SCRIPT WRITING

How to take an idea and turn it into a story, specifically a story for film. Identify theme, premise and genre of your story. Write a synopsis, analysis and treatment for the story. Write the structure and narrative and complete the beginning and end and identify the highlights and figure out the USP of the story. Work on the plot construction, outline and One line order. Then take it to the next level by learning how to use script writing softwares that are accepted and standard in any film industry (such as Celtx and Final Draft) and learn how to weave in dialogue and action to create an effective shooting script. 

 

Understanding the grammar of a screenplay and the various technical details that go into the most important part of filmmaking - concept and writing. Without it, nothing else exits. Meet industry professionals and watch their work, ask questions and understand the various working styles of different creators. Read and analyse screenplays of important films to understand the craft of writing and how to integrate it to the art of writing. 

 

Put all this into practice for the short film.

EDITING AND SOUND DESIGN

A film is made on the editing table. Learn the fundamentals of editing, different styles of editing, basics of FCP, application to their own project (short film). 

 

This is where the technical and the artistic aspects of filmmaking meet and understanding this craft is crucial to creating the right narrative as per the filmmaker’s vision. An Editor helps the Director make the final decisions as to what is heard and seen in the film and controls the pace and rhythm of the story.

 

Sound design integrates visual and sense narratives to bring to life the story the filmmaker sets out to tell. Understanding various streams of audio techniques including on location recording, capturing sounds, studio recording, dubbing, track layering, designing basic sound fx in their project and mixing tracks in their short film.

 

Analyse the edit and sound design of a movie and also watch professionals work on editing, dubbing, sound design and mixing to really understand the various post-production elements that convert raw footage into a Film.

FILM ACTING

Learn acting techniques for camera and on-stage. From voice exercises and training to relaxation techniques and movement exercises, work on understanding a character and apply that to the project (short film).

 

1.    Improve confidence and ease in front of a camera or on stage in front of a live audience.


2.    Work on public speaking techniques, body language and voice modulation.


3.    Work on body, voice and movement exercises to improve the tools of an actor.


4.    Understand how to direct actors and how to communicate with actors before and during the shoot process.


5.    Learn to do the three most crucial aspects of an actor’s act - concentrate, relax and imagine. 


6.    Work on character exercises and interact with professional actors and learn about their process.

BASICS OF ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

Adobe Photoshop is popular these days for it helps designers and editors in their works. It turns mere pictures into masterpieces. Its versatility made it in demand in the creative world for it is the best photo editing software program that gives you great features for a totally terrific design. Other than that, Adobe Photoshop is user friendly and it provides tools that will aid you in the editing and enhancing of photos. You can also do some lay-outing and designing from a blank document, whatever size you may want.

 

Aside from editing photos, you can actually start from scratch and create a greeting card, a business card, a poster, and others. By using the different creative tools in this software, you can surely come up with a great design that will not only impress clients but will also enable you to apply your ideas and creativity into it.

 

We will discuss in detail how to effectively create selections using advanced techniques in Photoshop and look at tools such as Colour Range and Focus Range selection. This will allow you to make selections as accurately as possible inside the software. Also a class that gives you the skills to remove blemishes, reduce or remove lines and wrinkles, eliminate shiny skin, improve lighting and enhance colour and tone. Here you will learn the skills to take your portraits to a professional standard.

 

What we will achieve in this course is to work on a poster design for the short film project. 

BASICS OF USING A DSLR CAMERA

This covers a broad range of fundamental principles in photography, from camera control to principles of composition and creativity, providing you with a foundation for growth in taking photographs.

 

Whether you want to tell a story, sell a product or just show how beautiful a certain place you visited is, photography plays an essential role in fulfilling your creative vision. The Photography course is created to be quick and easy to learn photography and gives opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge and capture those images.

 

Photography is used as a form of communication and the understanding the process of capturing and recording is crucial to communicate exactly what we want. Understanding the concept of exposure, is essential to your ability to capture the scene, the way you see it. Finally we take look at the various types of cameras currently available and why you would use one over the other.

 

Work on taking pictures for the poster and working stills of the short film project. 

MUSIC APPRECIATION

Music is something we listen to, play, dance to, sing, write, read, improvise and analyze. We use it to enhance our experiences, distract us and to impart information. Music is entwined throughout our lives in many different ways. The aim of this course is to explore how the various brain systems are engaged by music. What are the cognitive demands of different types of music and different types of musical activities? And how do the auditory, visual, motor, memory and emotional systems respond to these demands?The concepts from this growing literature will form the basis for learning how to describe and explain musical features and musical activities.

 

What we hope to impart in this course:


Understanding the basics of classical music and how filmmakers use music in cinema. 

 

Understand the different components of music - rhythm, beat, form, harmony.

THEATRE APPRECIATION

An introduction to: the art, business and history of theatre. The course is designed to increase the students understanding and appreciation of the work of the various artists engaged in creating theatre through a participatory approach.

 

This introduces the student to dramatic literature of the world from ancient to modern times, and to the arts and crafts which transform it into the living theatre. It is designed to develop the student’s knowledge and appreciation of the theatre arts through a historic and contemporary approach so that the student may gain a greater satisfaction from dramatic presentations. Attendance at live stage productions is a mandatory part of this course.
